‘Watching more closely’ – Roy Keane’s verdict on Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings
Roy Keane believes England manager Gareth Southgate will be watching Aston Villa more closely in the coming months in order to keep an eye on Tyrone Mings.
The centre-back was recalled to the England team to face Kosovo on Sunday evening, replacing Manchester City’s John Stones, who was given the nod over Mings in Thursday’s 7-0 win against Montenegro.
That win at Wembley secured the Three Lions their place at Euro 2020, and competition is expected to be fierce for a place in Southgate’s squad for the championships next summer.
Keane believes Southgate – whose side claimed a 4-0 win in Pristina – will be keeping a close eye on his old club in the Premier League in order to track Mings’ progress throughout the rest of the season.
“He done okay tonight but it is so difficult to try to judge,” the former Manchester United skipper and Villa assistant manager told ITV Sport about Mings’ display against Kosovo.
“We are talking about international football here and some of the defending and some of the teams in England’s group have been shocking. They really have been dire in terms of defending.
“Mings has done okay tonight. But I’m convinced I could have played at the back for England tonight it was that easy for them. And you do have to bring that into the equation…of course you do.”

Keane then added: “Absolutely, this is where he is going to be found out. Villa have just been promoted and they are doing a lot of defending, it will be a tough season for them.
“Gareth, no doubt, will be watching more closely what he does at Villa that what he has done here tonight.”
