Stafford: I blamed myself for Irish Cup defeat

Mark Stafford

Mark Stafford says he felt responsible for Linfield’s Irish Cup exit to Queen’s University, describing the defeat as the “lowest point of my career”.

Stafford gave away a second half penalty which earned Queen’s their shock win at the Dub on January 4.

The 32-year-old says getting knocked out of the blue riband competition was worse than being hammered 11-0 by Portadown during his time with Ballinamallard United.

He said:

“I took it badly. At the end of the day I gave away the penalty which cost us the game. I felt responsible for a lot of the criticism David Healy got. A lot of it was down to my mistake and my performance on the day. It was a very long week, personally. It is the lowest I have felt in my career.”
